Top Ten: Films To Look Out For In 2013

New year, new movies. Here are ten that I’m interested in seeing in 2013, listed in order of release date. Trailers provided where available!

1. Stoker (March 1st)

After India’s father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

I think Nicole Kidman is at her best when she’s being creepy (The Others, Practical Magic), so this should be a real treat.

2. Oz: The Great and Powerful (March 8th)

A Kansas con-artist is swept into a magical land where he must fight an evil sorceress.

The Wizard of Oz, fan. Return to Oz, fan. The Wiz, fan. Wicked, fan. I think I’m going to be a fan…

3. Carrie (March 15th)

A sheltered high school girl unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after she is pushed too far by her peers.

Some might say it’s a pointless remake but I suspect that Julianne Moore’s performance as Carrie’s mother is going to be worth the ticket price alone.

4. The Great Gatsby (May 10th)

Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner now living on Long Island, finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby’s circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy.

Can’t think of much else to say about this one other than I can’t wait to see it, which I suppose speaks for the mysterious allure the character of Gatsby has in the novel.

5. Monsters University (June 21st)

A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at the University of Fear — when they weren’t necessarily the best of friends.

Don’t lie to yourself, you’ve been waiting twelve years for this just like I have. The cinemas are going to be full of 24 year old adult-children who want nothing more than a hug from Sully.

6. The Lone Ranger (July 3rd)

Native American spirit warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.

Oh, look! It’s a film in which Johnny Depp is dressed in a quirky fashion, and Helena Bonham Carter too. I must see it.

7. RED 2 (August 2nd)

Frank Moses and his motley crew of retired assassins return for a second outing.

RED came out of nowhere for me in 2010 and ended up being one of my favourites of the year. Great cast, tongue in cheek, let’s hope the sequel follows suit.

8. Gravity (October 18th)

Astronauts attempt to return to earth after debris crashes into their space shuttle, leaving them drifting alone in space.

George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star in this one. I love a good sci-fi and I love a good disaster movie, this looks to be an Armageddon scale combo!

9. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (November 22nd)

The continuing adventures of Katniss Everdeen, which take place in a futuristic dystopian world, as she prepares for the Quarter Quell.

Coming in to November we enter blockbuster territory, none of which will be bigger this year than the second helping of the Hunger Games trilogy. I just can’t get enough of children killing each other.

10. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (December 13th)

The Dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf have successfully escaped the Misty Mountains, and Bilbo has gained the One Ring. They all continue their journey to get their gold back from the Dragon, Smaug.

Looks like I’ll be ending 2013 exactly the same way I ended 2012. With a numb backside and a crush on a dwarf.
